Staying Connected at MauiTime Tweet Up

We joked in the first five minutes that the tweet up was running on MauiTime because our German visitors (@hawaiitwentyten) were the first to show up at 11:50 (five minutes early). But the meeting got rolling to over twenty tweeters quite quickly.

Our initial goals were to learn about and write down at least two to four handles and personalities, but everyone far outreached that goal quickly. We chatted up familiar and unfamiliar twitter friends, ate fish and chips, burgers, musubi, salads and drinks. I have created a list on twitter at http://twitter.com/jenrusso/mauitime-tweet-up of all participants

Maui Bake Shop to reopen Tomorrow

I am really excited to have a new breakfast and lunch option by the office, especially because its an old favorite openin up again. Jose and Claire Krall sold their business almost a year ago and handed operations over. Those operators only lasted a few months closing around september. The Kralls had been running the bakery for about twenty years.

French pastries, fresh baked breads, soup, salads and sandwiches were all very good. Their croissants were off the hook too. They baked everything in a giant open oven, old school.

I know they have made changes but hopefully they have only added to their menu. The open date is Thursday, may 12. they are located at the corner of vineyard and church streets in wailuku. See you there!

South By Southwest Talent Scout Coming to Maui

Last year Anuhea did an excellent job representing the valley isle. Who is going to be there this year? Is it you? Check it out, on May 21st you can drop by Bistro Casanova to see Phil Tripp who is looking for local talent for the show.

The 25th annual South by Southwest Music & Media Festival happens March 16-20, 2011 in Austin, Texas but in advance of band submissions starting in early August, the  Pacific Rim representative of SxSW--Phil Tripp from Sydney Australia--is coming to Hawai'i to scout bands and network with music professionals.  Over the past two years, a growing presence of contemporary music artists from Hawai'i have played showcases at SxSW and there has been a stand for labels, managers and entrepreneurs in the SxSW Trade Fair.

Tripp's set up a meeting on Maui Friday May 21, 5 pm at Bistro Casanova located at 33 Lono Avenue in the Kahului Shopping Centre for those artists interested in submitting for showcases or professionals who want to be delegates at the world's largest and longest-running music festival, conference and trade fair.  There is no charge to attend this meeting and it's the only time Tripp will be in Maui to meet up with local music industry folk in 2010.

Tripp is an ex-American living in Sydney but is also experienced in the Hawai'i music scene from his first time stage managing Kool Pacific Festival in 1976 at the Waikiki Shell, through 50 trips here since and working with local artists and labels.  He's coming over this time for the Na Hoku Awards and Festival on Oahu May 27-31 and meeting with Hawai'i government and music business execs who have been pivotal in supporting a major push to this music industry event.

In 2009, John Cruz, Anuhea, David Tamaoka, Pimpbot and One Right Turn played a series of showcases while in 2010. Anuhea and Pimpbot returned with Kona, Tavana, Sabrina and Yahiowa 13.  There was also a major stand presence in the conference exhibition area and over 30 Hawaiian professionals attended.  The presence has been supported over the past two years by the Hawai'i State Government Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), Roy's Restaurants (where extra nightly shows were held) and World Sound which sponsored the trade fair stand.

As Tripp outlines, "We've been excited with the contemporary music artists of Hawai'i who have applied and succeeded in getting traction in the mainland and overseas markets by playing SxSW.  The music styles best suited for this event are rock, indie, singer/songwriter, pop and more modern, louder styles than slack key, traditional or hula which are more suited to world music festivals."

South by Southwest Music & Media Festival in March 2010 attracted over 13,000 music conference participants from 49 countries which included 2300 music media attendees.  Close to 2000 artists from 49 countries played showcase in 89 venues across Austin in the five nights.  This is from over 10,500 artists who applied for the coveted showcase slots.  Website is http://www.sxsw.com/music

No reservations are necessary and there is no cost to attend the meeting.

Congrats @thethrowdowns for the Na Hoku Hanohano Award Nom, Rock Album of the Year

We knew you guys rocked it! This is awesome news. Congrats for all the hard work, and thank you for showing the world Maui rocks.

THE THROWDOWNS HONORED, SURPRISED BY NA HOKU HANOHANO NOMINATIONS FOR DEBUT ALBUM

(April 27, 2010 - MAUI, HI) The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts recently announced its finalists for the 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and Hawai‘i’s newest emerging pop-rock outfit, The Throwdowns, were nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. The Maui band’s debut, “Don’t Slow Down,” earned a nomination for Rock Album of the Year, and the creative team behind The Throwdowns’ imagery—Dogtowne Design’s Scott Johnson and Tony Novak-Clifford Photography—were nominated for the Graphics Award for best designed and created album package.

“We are extremely honored and surprised at the nominations,” said The Throwdowns. “This album melds our stylistic hold in modern, edgy pop with our muse—Hawaiian music, roots and influences.”

The Throwdowns’ “Don’t Slow Down” garnered many accolades over the year, including shortlisting on several critics’ “best of” lists and the respect of a local music scene that has embraced the hard-working musicians’ fresh, island rock. The Throwdowns feel very fortunate to have the awesome support of a loyal, and rapidly growing, fan-base on their voyage to worldwide success.

The Throwdowns remain humble as they continually receive invites to play with some of Hawai‘i’s most notable artists, including Henry Kapono and Amy Hanaiali‘i, and have shared stages, big and small, with such international touring acts as The Fray, Matisyahu, Bad Brains, 311, NOFX, the English Beat and many others. Some band highlights include hearing the panache prince of Panic! At The Disco, Brendon Urie, warming up vocally with their “On The Radio” at the Waikiki Shell last year, or a backstage declaration by Metallica’s James Hetfield at a recent Sammy Hagar show regarding The Throwdowns’ “really big sound.”

The debut album’s strength and “spinnability,” along with the band’s explosive live performances, led The Throwdowns to a national distribution deal with ADA/Warner Music Group. To their surprise, “Don't Slow Down” has sold as well in New York as it has in their homebase of Hawai‘i. Written by band members Erin Smith, Ola Shaw, Kimo Clark and Ian Hollingsworth, and engineered/produced/mixed and mastered by Shaw’s We Are More Productions, “Don’t Slow Down” is just the first step in a sound that is evolving organically, and headed full speed for a broader audience.

NOMINATIONS: A CONVERSATION WITH THE CREATIVE TEAM
“Our graphics were an artistically intense process,” said The Throwdowns. “Getting the imagery our team and our band were looking for required the meeting of minds, and many hours of brainstorming and shooting.”

Artistic forces, Scott Johnson and Tony Novak-Clifford, took the time to document the experience and posted a blog about the creative process behind “Don’t Slow Down.” Take a glimpse into the building of the Hoku nominated graphics at http://www.tonynovak-clifford.blogspot.com/2010/04/na-hoku-nominations-conversation-with.html.

“Mahalos to Scott Johnson of Dogtowne Design and Tony Novak-Clifford Photography for doing such tremendous work on ‘Don't Slow Down,’” said the Throwdowns. “Their nomination is well-deserved.”

KGMB, ROADRUNNER MUSIC HALL AND PIPELINE CAFÉ PERFORMANCES
In celebration of The Throwdowns’ Na Hoku Hanohano nominations, and in support of national release of “Don’t Slow Down,” the band will be performing live on the KGMB Sunrise morning show on Thursday, April 29.  Later the same day, The Throwdowns will take the stage at Clear Channel’s Road Runner Music Hall, which will air live on the web at 3 p.m. Watch from your home, office or phone by heading to www.star1019.com to find the broadcast. The Throwdowns are proud to release the re-mastered version of “Don't Slow Down” nationally, through ADA/Warner Music Group, with an official launch party on Friday evening, April 30, at Honolulu’s Pipeline Café. Tickets available at Pipeline and the University of Hawai‘i Box Office.

THE THROWDOWNS
The Throwdowns hail from the island of Maui, and continue to make waves in Hawai‘i’s music scene in their first year together. Their dynamic sound is often compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, The Pretenders, The Clash, but with an electro-club, Hawaiian edge. Their single “Kïhei Town” hit No. 1 on several radio stations, and their big shows routinely sell out. The band is currently working on a new album, and head to Los Angeles soon to perform showcases at the Warner Music Group offices. The energetic outfit consists of a Canadian girl, two Hawaiian guys and one man from Pennsylvania who have no intention of slowing down in their mission to “take over the world.”
